Languages
Intent
Through progressive and purposeful planning, children will begin to express their ideas in another language. Through the exploration of another culture and language the children will be given another perspective on the world, facilitating their natural curiosity and developing an interest in other languages, laying the foundations for future language learning.
Implementation
The aims of teaching a modern language in Key Stage 2 at Salehurst are:
To foster an interest in language learning by introducing children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and accessible to all pupils
To stimulate and encourage children’s curiosity about language and creativity in experimenting with it
To support oracy and literacy, and in particular develop speaking and listening skills
To help children develop their awareness of cultural similarities and differences;
To lay the foundations for future language study by pupils
To give an extra dimension to teaching and learning across the curriculum
Learning French is planned following the guidelines set out in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages. We have recently chosen Language Angels as a structured and good quality scheme.
We use speaking and listening activities and involve the children in both reading and writing the language. We use visual and interactive resources to make learning accessible to all. We use native speaker recordings to ensure authentic pronunciation, where possible.
Impact
Children leave Salehurst with an understanding of a basic vocabulary in French, and with the confidence to speak a little French too. They will know of the importance of communicating in another language as a way of connecting to other people and an enjoyment of being able to speak another language. They will also have experienced writing in French, as the beginnings of learning a skill which they will continue with at secondary school.
